New Ram 1500 Aces Crash Test, But Fails To Get Top Safety Pick Rating

Published

New, 2019 RAM 1500 IIHS Crash test

It missed out on the coveted rating because seemingly innocuous oversight.

Make no mistake, the all-new, 2019 Ram 1500 is a very safe pickup truck. It aced nearly all of the Insurance Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s six crashworthiness tests, including the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, passenger-side small overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints tests, whereas the previous generation Ram 1500 received a less impressive marginal rating in the driver-side small overlap front test and the roof strength test.

Unfortunately, it missed out on the coveted Top Safety Pick rating because its best available headlights earned only a marginal rating.

It’s worth noting that the IIHS introduced the passenger-side small overlap test in 2017, and 2019 Ram 1500 is the first pickup to undergo and, thus, ace the test. It’s optional front crash prevention system also earned a superior rating, helping avoid crashes at 12 mph and 25 mph as tested.

Does a marginal rating for the headlights deter you from getting the new RAM 1500? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

2019 Ram 1500 Rebel EcoDiesel

The torque king of half-tonne diesel trucks is here.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is here, and it delivers class-leading torque.

RAM’s latest half-tonne truck is powered by a turbocharged 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 that produces 260 horsepower, 8 percent more than the last EcoDiesel V6, and 480 lb-ft. of torque, whic is up 14 percent. That’s more torque than any other half-ton diesel pickup truck, including the similarly new Chevy Silverado diesel.

Engineers were able to achieve those power figures by giving the EcoDiesel a new water-cooler turbocharger, redesigned cylinder head, an updated exhaust gas recirculation system, and new fuel injector nozzles. The truck can tow up to 12,560 pounds and also comes with an air suspension that not only improves the ride control, but also fuel economy.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2019. Pricing starts at $38,585 for the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD model, including the destination fees.
