It seems Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s brashness has rubbed off on his fellow executives, with company Vice President of Business Development Diarmuid O’Connell unabashedly calling the competition “little more than appliances.”
O’Connell made the comment during the Center for Automotive Research’s Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, MI, specifically stating:
“In essence, [mainstream automakers] delivered little more than appliances. Now, appliances are useful. But they tend to be white. They tend to be unemotional.”
According to , his critique was mainly directed at vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 (pictured above), which he believes don’t deliver enough performance or range to entice consumers outside of a small group.
O’Connell’s solution, of course, is more power, more range, more excitement and a lower price, presumably talking about the highly-anticipated Tesla Model 3. But even he agrees that some EVs are better than none:
“On balance, I’m happier that [traditional automakers are] doing these cars than not. I just wish they would do them better and faster.”
Do you agree with his sentiments? Are Tesla’s competition no better than appliances? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The 4S is nearly $47,000 less expensive than the midrange Turbo edition.
Porsche has expanded the Taycan lineup with the addition of the Taycan 4S, a more affordable version of its first electric car.
The Taycan 4S is powered by an all-electric drivetrain consisting of two electric motors, a two-speed transmission, and a 79.2 kWh kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

Porsche hasn’t announced how far the either Taycan 4S versions can drive on a single charge, but the electric range will likely span from around 225 to 250 miles based on the EPA’s testing.
Models equipped with the 79.2 kWh battery can be recharged up to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes.
The 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S has a starting price of $103,800 in the United States, which is nearly $47,000 less than the Taycan Turbo. Deliveries begin in spring 2020.

Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition Comes Back For 2020
Lincoln has nearly doubled production to 150 units.
Missed out on your chance to get the Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition? You are in luck! Lincoln has decided to bring back the model for the 2020 model year.
Introduced in 2018 to celebrate the brand’s 80th anniversary, the special edition Continental rides on a stretched wheelbase that provides more room for passengers and features center-opening ‘suicide’ doors.
Back-seat passengers benefit from a table on the center console, two tablet holders, and individual climate controls, while the entire interior is covered in premium materials that mostly match the regular Continental’s range-topping Black Label trim.
The Continental Coach Door Edition is powered by a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque. Buyers can choose from three colors: Chroma Crystal Blue, Infinite Black, and Pristine White Metallic.
The 2019 model’s limited production run of 80 units sold out in just two days, so Lincoln saw it fit to increase output to around 150 examples for 2020. The price tag of $115,470 for each unit represents a premium of nearly $40,000 premium over the regular Continental Black Label.
There is a good chance that all 150 units of the Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition will be sold in a blink of an eye, so act fast if you want one. Deliveries are expected to begin by spring 2020.
